In the spirit of giving back, and our desire to support local businesses and artists, we are doing an artist spotlight series. We will be showcasing a new artist each day for the next 31 days. Today’s artist is Chris Murray, a designer and illustrator from NY – not the city through, Upstate NY, along the St. Lawrence River in a small town called Norfolk.
We have the pleasure to not only spotlighting him, but we got the chance to pick his brain to find out what inspires him to create his designs and the tools and programs he uses to create his art.
Question: How did you get into design?
Chris’s Answer: I’ve always enjoyed the elements of design. The interest probably started as a kid when I used to study comic books and graffiti magazines. With graffiti, people always seem to point out the bright colors but I was even more so attracted to the sense of design for each letter and character. Incredibly inspiring!
Question: Where are you from, where did you go to school?
Chris’s Answer: I’m from a small town (Norfolk, NY) located in upstate NY along the St. Lawrence river where it’s winter 6 months out of the year – basically Canada (about 30 min. from the border). I went to college at R.I.T. (Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, NY where I studied illustration.
Question: What are your tools of the trade?
Chris’s Answer: All traditional media (Paint, pencil, pens, markers etc.) and the computer for digital touch ups. For a majority of my illustration work I use Photoshop and elements of Illustrator. But all my work has a hint of traditional media as I love to draw and paint.
Question: What websites do you go to for design inspiration?
Chris’s Answer: Ehhh none really jump out at me. Maybe Designspiration. I usually look through magazines or books for inspiration.
Question: What is your favorite movie, band, and artist?
Chris’s Answer: Favorite movie…that’s tough. All through high school and college it was Gladiator. Thought that movie was brilliant and still do. I tend to like war movies for some reason. I love a Thin Red Line. Bands…hmmm. I’m a big hip hop head. Gangstarr is one of my all time favorite groups. The Demigodz and Loop Troop Rockers are a couple of groups I constantly check up on these days. Artist…too many to name.
Question: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in design?
Chris’s Answer: Be persistent and passionate about your craft. You have to own it / live it to truly be great at what you do. Also try to be innovative while still being aware of the things happening around you at the present moment.
You can find more of Chris’s work at his website.
